WHY YOU SHOULD CREATE A MY SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT

| Aug 24, 2018 | Applying for benefits, Social Security Administration (SSA)

If you are applying for Social Security disability benefits or are already receiving benefits, it is imperative that you create a my Social Security account. This is one of the most important tools that will help you manage your transactions. Opening an account is free. It is also easy and quick. To create an account, log on to SocialSecurity.gov/myaccount and select Sign in or Create an Account. Next, select Create an Account, and agree to the Social Security Administration’s terms and conditions. You can select a username and password that you’ll later use to access your account. The next step is to create your account details and choose how you want to receive the security code. When you receive the security code, either via your e-mail address or cell phone, enter it in the space provided and press Submit.  That’s all it takes to create a Social Security account for yourself.

You don’t have to be currently receiving benefits in order to open your my Social Security account. You can open an account even if you have just applied for your benefits.

You can also use your account to:

  • request a replacement Social Security card;
  • check on the status of your Social Security application;
  • appeal an unfavorable decision; and
  • receive your Social Security statement.

If you are currently receiving benefits, you can use your account to check your benefits and payment information, your earnings record, make changes to your address, phone number, or the direct deposit of your payment.
